Arthur Fery made a fine start to 2023 on the ITF World Tennis Tour, claiming his third title in six months with victory at M25 Malibu.

The 20-year-old Brit rallied back from 0-3 down in the final set to defeat American Alex Michelsen 6-4 2-6 6-4 in the title match.

It was Fery’s third final in his last four appearances in ITF competition, having won at M25 Sheffield and finished runner-up at M25 Sunderland in back-to-back weeks in October.

Fery, a former junior world No. 12 who was raised in Wimbledon by French parents Olivia (a former tennis player) and Loic (President of French Football club FC Lorient) and currently attends Stanford University, was delighted with his week in California.

“I was alone this week, without my coach, so it was a little harder, but I took care of business and I’m happy that I could do it on my own,” he said.

“I’m glad to see my game is evolving. It’s super positive, super confidence-boosting, especially since the whole of the college year is played on hardcourt. Hopefully I’ll have a positive season with Stanford. If I play like I did this week, I have a chance (of winning the NCAA Division I individual singles championship). That’s definitely a goal of mine.”

While college tennis occupies his immediate goals, the world No. 477 is also eyeing the ATP Challenger Tour – and a maiden main draw victory at that level of competition – to further progress his career.

“As a competitor and as a professional, your goal is to be ranked as high as possible,” Fery said. “I’m probably going to be looking for more Challengers from now on so it boosts my ranking and gets me into more tournaments.”

There was another triumph for a junior standout this weekend, with former boys’ world No. 19 Guy Den Ouden claiming his sixth ITF singles crown at M15 Monastir.

The 20-year-old Dutchman denied Bogdan Bobrov a second successive title in 2023 after winning their final 7-5 6-2.
